US EPA proposes to exempt chitosan products from registration needs

The US EPA is proposing to add the naturally occurring substance, chitosan (poly-D-glucosamine), to its list of “minimum risk” active ingredients that are eligible for exemption from registration requirements. Chitosan is registered as a plant growth regulator for use on field crops, ornamentals, turf, home gardens and nurseries. It is also registered as a fungicide and antimicrobial agent. The proposal is open to public comment until November 30th.
