Australian state NSW to lift ban on GM crops

The Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) is to lift its ban on the use of genetically modified crops by allowing an 18-year moratorium to lapse on July 1st. The state imposed the moratorium in 2003, under which, any approval given by Australia’s federal regulator, Oice of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR), did not apply to the state unless approved by the state’s regulator. But GM cotton has been cultivated in the state since 1996, while GM canola and salower have been grown since 2008 under exemptions.
