PCA exits newsprint business

Packaging Corp of America (PCA) will not rebuild the idled newsprint machine PM 2 atthe DeRidder/ Louisiana mill to produce containerboard. Instead, paper machine PM 3, which currently produces newsprint, will be refitted to produce lightweight liner paper and corrugating medium. With this move, PCA will exit the newsprint business which has been operating below breakeven, the company informed. The rebuild of PM 3 has been scheduled to start in mid-September this year. Until then the machine will continue to produce newsprint for PCA customers. The start-up of the machine is planned for 1 November. After the rebuild, the machine will have a capacity of 355,000 tpy of containerboard.
