Although of its time, it was published in 1932, it remains a standard text on the subject. It is a classic because Symons-Jeune had the observant eye of a geologist. Hedescribes making rock gardens based on an underlying understanding of the natural forces and climate that have forged rock formations. From these he develops strong principlesthat must be adhered to if a rock garden is to look as natural as possible, even if constructed in an unnatural setting.
