Comparison of Thermoelectrically Cooled and Conventional Si(Li) X-ray Detectors

The analytical parameters of an XRF system based on a thermoelectrically cooled silicon detector were determined and compared with those of a Si(Li)-based XRF setup. Conventional Si(Li) or Ge detectors require cooling with liquid nitrogen which hampers, for example, out-of-labora-tory applications of x-ray fluorescence method Therefore, any development of room (or near room) temperature, high-resolution x-ray detectors is usually observed with great interest and with hope of eliminating definitely the requirement for using liquid nitrogen in portable XRF systems In recent years some authors (e.g. Huber et al., 1994; Jalas et al., 1995; Pinotti et al., 1995) have reported on new detectors which might provide a good alternative to a conventional liquid nitrogen-cooled solid state x-ray detector.
