Germany's imports stay steady

Germany's coal imports remained steady overall in May in comparison with the first three months of 2003, climbing back up from a brief dip seen in April. The country imported 2,113 million mt of coal in May, up from 1.876 million in April, but fairly flat in comparison with March's 2.067 million. While month-on-month imports of anthracite, coking coal and steam coal all declined, this was offset by increased imports of other hard coals. Steam coal imports in May came to 1.264 million, with Poland, Russia, South Africa and Colombia dominating the supply chain, a similar situation to previous months. Germany took 574,807 mt from Poland, 151,805 mt from Russia, 271,048 mt from South Africa and 185,677 mt from Colombia. Slightly less coal was taken from Russia and slightly more from South Africa when compared with April's figures.
