Indonesia wants BHP to resume Kalimantan exploration

Indonesia's mine ministry remains hopeful BHP Billiton can resume exploration work this year at a coal prospect in Central Kalimantan province, which could potentially host a world-grade deposit, an Indonesian official said. The Central Kalimantan prospect in the Barito Utaram district has been compared to the reserves of the so-called first generation mines that were discovered in East and South Kalimantan several decades ago. A BHP Billiton unit, PT Sumber Barito, has done initial exploratory work at the prospect. But it halted its activities because the area has been classified as forest protection reserve.
