Chinese coking coal exports breaking records

Chinese coking coal exports continue to break records with 5.9 million mt being exported in the first five months of the year. This is significantly higher than the previous corresponding period when exports hit a paltry 3.9 million mt and the first five months of 2001 when exports were as low as 2.6 million mt. Asia is soaking up the exports with steel production in Asia soaring over the period with production in the region increasing by almost 20 million mt, or 12.4 percent. Some sources suggested toward mid-June that Platts trim its spot market petcoke price chart assessment by more than it was actually adjusted. Further assessments garnered last week were emboldening in that regard.
