In January 2013, the Royal College of Physicians of England published a report entitled ‘Action on Obesity: Comprehensive Care for All’ (1). The report represented the considerations of a group or experts from primary, secondary and public health, as well as representatives of the main healthcare professional organizations who met over a period of 18 months to produce a policy document intended to improve the access of patients with obesity to specialist care. It is well known that the prevalence of obesity in adults and in children in the UK is among the highest in the developed world. The working party decided early on to concentrate the thrust of the report to ensure that multidisciplinary services, which are currently more than patchy, should be set up in the areas where they do not currently exist. Further, it was decided to establish obesity champions in all the district hospital in the country with the idea of those interacting both with the multidisciplinary services and with the community.
