Rows of pens change shape on this Danish unit in order to act as places for farrowing, rearing and grow-finishing batches of 3 litters at a time, while pregnant sows have an escape area from their fellow-members of the gestation group in other new housing. Peter Vinsb01 in Denmark admits that his pig housing can seem like a work in progress. A structure he erected as recently as October 2002 has already undergone 7-8 changes of interior design. In its latest form it contains the Vinsb01 version of birth-to-slaughter pens. What is more, these same places also feature multiple suckling and a novel idea for non-confinement farrowing — with plastic balls replacing the anti-crush crate.
