For coal, sampling - along with analysis -are the key components in safeguarding the integrity of the quality cycle. Having got the definitions out of the way, how do you provide such a vital service to the market's buyers and sellers? Mechanical sampling systems are virtually standard at every major coal terminal in the world. Generally speaking, these work in one of three ways: firstly, as a falling stream sampler which literally swings across the moving conveyor in a set direction taking out increments of coal along the way. Then there is a cross belt sampler which moves across the belt pushing a section of coal to the side while the belt is running. Or as a stop-belt, where the conveyor is periodically halted and all of the coal , within a 2-3m span of belt is collected.
