Self-discharging ships have been around a long time, being originally confined to the Great Lakes, where winter conditions forced a closedown of navigation. But some of the Lakers traded on the USEC, sometimes as far as the Caribbean. However, it was not until Canadian Steamship Lines (CSL) started operations in Europe and then constructed vessels specifically designed for international trade outside of the Great lakes, that the concept took off.
