Effect of oral tamoxifen on growth and survival in the bagrid catfish Pseudobagrus fulvidraco

Tamoxifen a triphenylethylene ([z]-l-p-dimethyl-aminoethoxyphenyl-12-diphenyl-l-butene) has been used as an antiestrogen to treat estrogen-responsive human breast cancers and to promote growth in poultry (Bush & Helzlsouer 1993; Jordan & Morrow 1993;Jurani Somogyiova Lamasova Vyboh, Ambius & Chrappa 1987). Dietary administration of 100 rig ta-moxifen/kg feed during gonadal differentiation in a hybrid population of Oreochromis niloticus x O. aureus produced completely 100% male (Hines & Watts 1995). In addition tamoxifen influenced gonadal gender without producing an elevated or increased incidence of morphological abnormalities.
