Bacterial and fungal infections still are life-threatening complications in immunocompromised patients. Transfusion of allogeneic granulocytes, collected by donor-aphere-sis, may be indicated to control these infections [1], Sedimentation agents such as high- or low molecular weight hydroxyethyl starch (HES) are routinely used to improve the separation of WBCs from RBCs.
