Vine carnage and crop loss from spring frosts are poten- tiai dangers -n most winegrow ing regions. California growers in recent years have seen frost events characterized by unusual or unanticipated severity. Centra! Coast vineyards in parts of Monterey, San Luis Obisoo and Santa Barbara counties experienced significant frosi damage over three days in Aprii 2011 when morning temperatures dipped beiow 28°F. This frost event was much more severe than most regional weather forecasts had pre-d'Cted. Vineyaids nearer the coast, or with a coastal marine weather influence, generally were less affected than the inland areas of northern Sar Luis Obispo County and southern Monterey Countv, where temperatures were coldest.
