Four groups of 15 male albino rats each were givendaily 40mg/kg dietary melatonin and 1% hydrogen peroxide (HP) in drinking water daily for 30days (group 1), HP (2) or melatonin (3) only. Controls were fed normally and given only drinkingwater (4). Blood was taken at 30 days for serum testosterone, glutathione, luteonizing hormone,Malondialdehyde (MDA) and peroxynitrite. Rats were sacrificed for testes weight. Comparedwith water controls, in rats given only HP, testosterone and glutathione declined 44 and 57%but peroxynitrites and MDA increased ~146 and 37% (P < 0.05). In those given HP withmelatonin there was also a decline (P <0.05) in glutathione of 35%. Melatonin alone reduced (P< 0.05) MDA 36% compared with control and 54% compared with those given HP. We found nodifference in testes weights between any group. Results suggest no effect of melatonin ofperoxidation markers given to rats ingesting HP, but it did reduce serum MDA compared withcontrols.
