Al smelters boosting output

Most of Chinese aluminum smelters, especially those large ones, have been lifting production by commissioning newly-added capacity or restarting idled capacity in recent three months. As a result, the nation's monthly output of primary aluminum has kept on growing rapidly and continued to set record high in recent months, the NBS data shows. On December 1, 2005, Chinese top 23 aluminum smelters jointly announced a production cut program in a bid to reduce loss caused by the high alumina price. Chalco, the near monopoly producer of alumina in China, also announced that it would take part in the production cut program. However, facing the rising aluminum price worldwide this year, all the smelters have given up their production cut plan and boosted output instead.
