Future burn care: Balancing the relationship between cost and quality

With great interest we have read the paper of Hop et al.,1 who stated that cost studies and economic evaluations are needed to improve burn care quality, to enhance the harmonization of economic studies, to optimize comparability, and to gain insight into cost and efficiency of burn care. Furthermore, they stated that burn care costs are high because patients with burns often require specialized burn center treatment during a substantial length of time, including time- and material-intensive surgical and nonsurgical wound care, intensive care, and long periods of rehabilitation.1 We absolutely agree with the above-mentioned statements.
