Effect of Mould Materials on the Mould-Metal Interfacial Thermal Resistance in Squeeze Casting

摘要

In the case of the castings solidifying in metallic molds, the heat flow is controlled by the thermal resistance at the Mold-Metal interface. In this work experiments have been conducted to determine the effect of mold material on the thermal resistance and its influence on the solidification of the squeeze cast LM6 Aluminium alloy. The materials used for the mould are Copper, Cast iron. Die Steel and Stainless Steel. Investigations reveal that the conductivity of the mould material has a strong bearing on the interfacial thermal resistance. Stainless Steel, Cast Iron. Die Steel and Copper are listed according to the order of then decreasing thermal resistivity. Irrespective of the mould material, the increase in interfacial thermal resistance results in longer solidification time and decreased properties.
