The A1 Leeming to Barton is the only section of the M1/A1(M) route between London and Newcastle that is non-motorway, carrying an average of 60,000 vehicles every day. The upgrade will replace the existing dual carriageway and provide a new local access road alongside the upgraded motorway, improving the safety of traffic from the surrounding communities. Access to the strategic road network will be via a new grade separated junction at Catterick and an improved junction at Scotch Corner.
