The Pulmonologist's Role in Community Education and Advocacy Programs

Physicians traditionally work in the context of one-on-one patient/physician interaction. However, it is important to realize that community education and advocacy can be much more effective ways of preventing death and illness than clinical medicine as it is traditionally practiced. The key points for physicians interested in community advocacy include the following: setting an example, refusing to advertise death, learning the issues, networking, refusing to become intimidated, setting priorities, becoming politically oriented, litigation, being realistic, refusing to sell out, persistence, and humor.
