Export reduction illustrates damage to peach production

THE damage done to the Greek canned peach industry by the severe winter frosts in early 2003 is writ large in the slump in the country's exports, which more than halved to just under eight million cartons (24/A2(1/2) equivalent) from nearly 16.47 million cartons in 2002. When compared with the bumper export year of 2001, the state of the Greek industry seems even more parlous. There was little for Greece to celebrate in 2003. Exports to Germany, the country's largest export customer, tumbled by 44% to 2,45 million cartons from 4,38 million cartons in 2002 (and 7,35 million cartons in 2001) while UK uptake fell by nearly one-third to fraction-ally over one million cartons from 1.46 million cartons previously.
