INTRODUCTION: Wear-induced synovitis and osteolysis adjacent to orthopaedic implants is a known cause of symptomatology and failure and can be a consequence of metallosis from malfunctioning implants, such as metal-on-metal articulating hip bearings. Implant degradation products of metallic biomaterials include wear debris, colloidal organometallic complexes, free metallic ions, inorganic metal salts or oxides and precipitated organometallic storage forms. The metal ion formation through electrochemical process may activate the immune system by forming complexes with endogenous proteins and have been shown to be associated with sensitivity, which may manifest as dermatitis, urticaria, and vasculitis.
