Over the course of its three-year sponsorship of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), Inmarsat has played a unique role in helping the organizers ensure that the series of races are more efficient and highly co-ordinated. Maintaining communications while in the isolated parts of the world that the rally visits had previously posed serious logistical problems for the WRC's organizers. Inmarsat's Regional BGAN and GAN systems, for the first time, offered the WRC reliable, secure communication systems that would function in places-where GSM and land-based telecommunications networks would never be available. Not surprisingly, Inmarsat systems have been used extensively by the organizers. This is most notably in the timing cabinets at the start and finish of each of the rallies where a GAN or Regional BGAN system transmits the latest data to the service pa rk, where the teams' engineers are stationed, and the organizers at rally headquarters. The media has also benefited hugely from the WRC's use of Inmarsat technology. During its time as the FIA World Rally Championship's exclusive partner over the 2002-2004 seasons, Inmarsat was able to communicate real-time results and timings from rallies no matter where in the world they were being staged. This was pivotal in keeping TV viewers up to date on how drivers were faring during every stage of each rally.
