Roads ahead

Public procurement is big business in the EU, representing EURO 1.5trillion or over 16% of the EU GDP. All the more reason then for the EU to keep pace with developments in this sector and to modernise the legislation currently regulating it. At the moment a public body wanting to undertake a new roads project must do so in line with the rules and procedures set out in the relevant Public Procurement Directive. There are three Public Procurement Directives - the Public Works Directive, the Public Services Directive and the Public Supplies Directive. With the aim of simplifying matters, the new Consolidated Procurement Directive con-solidates the three Directives into a single text.
