The housebuilding industry is presently wrapped up in absorbing one of the most influential reports ever written about housing. Bank Of England economist Kate Barker delivered her review of UK housing supply to the chancellor on Budget day, lending symmetry to a project that was launched on the same day last year, A year ago the chancellor asked Barker to get a handle on how many extra homes we need a year to tackle our housing crisis and how they could be delivered. Her 160 page report, revealed on March 17, did just that. The report has been welcomed by the industry which on the whole is impressed with how quickly she got to grasp with the issues and the complexities of the debate. Barker says we need something in the region of 120,000 extra new homes a year in England, almost double the present provision.
