Safety key for new planing body

Like many trades within the construction industry, the road planing sector stands on the cusp of unprecedented change. Shifting client demands, a greater awareness of the environmental impact of our actions and a critical need for all companies to have a consistent approach to health and safety practices ensure that our sector must adapt. While the majority of planing contractors have an excellent approach to health and safety there is sufficient anecdotal evidence, which indicates that there is not a consistent approach which can lead to misunderstanding, a position which major contractors are not willing to tolerate. Inconsistent manning levels on different planers are one area where the planing industry must raise its game. To date, there has been a major failure by our industry to agree and implement a consistent approach to manning levels. Without an industrywide agreed standard I believe it is only a matter of time before a major incident occurs.
