Five share ￡400m work bonanza

Five contractors have been signed up by the Highways Agency for a ￡400 million road maintenance framework covering the East and South-East of England. The successful bidders are: Carillion, Birse, Interserve and two joint ventures between contractor and aggregates firms, BAM Nuttall/Hanson and Costain/Lafarge. Interserve chief executive Adrian Ringrose said: 'The Highways Agency's decision was based on our successful partnership in the two previous framework agreements and the positive validation of our business processes."
