Colas plays vital role in Tyne Tunnel construction

Road construction has started through the New Tyne Crossing (NTC), with operations for building the carriageway progressing in close coordination with other work in the tunnel. Having made good progress with tunnel construction, the main NTC design and build contractor Bouygues Travaux Publics has awarded a road building and surfacing contract to Colas, which is also now working at a rapid pace.Since award of its contract in December 2009 and after starting work in earnest in January, Colas has completed construction of carriageway up to base course level in the 300m of cut and cover tunnel on the north bank of the Tyne. The contractor is now working in the 1.1km southern approach tunnel, while also building foundations, drainage and pavement of the toll plaza at the northern end of the NTC.
