Cave detection near the Dead Sea—a micromagnetic feasibility study

Sinkholes are a serious hazard in the Dead Sea area. They started appearing in the area in the last two decades due to the dramatic drop in the Dead Sea's water level and soon became a major problem for commercial and industrial development. Sites with large, open sinkholes and collapse features have been identified throughout a wide region (white squares in Figure 1). The most alarming cases are sinkholes that have occurred recently in resort areas, on and around Highway 90, and at Israeli and Jordanian potash plants. Several geophysical methods have been employed to investigate and predict the occurrences; these include seismic, geo-electric, EM, microgravity, and now mi-cromagnetics.
