East of England's first managed motorway opens

The first section of managed motorway outside the West Midlands went live in both directions on the Ml near Luton - adding additional lane capacity for visitors travelling to Olympic and Paralympics Games venues. The early opening of a section of managed motorway on 12 July -on the M1 between junctions 10 and 11 - was one of three major road schemes that were completed ahead of the Olympics. Along with the A31 Canford Bottom junction in Dorset and the widening of the M25 between junctions 16 and 23 and junctions 27 and 30, the Highways Agency fulfilled its commitment to provide additional lane capacity and ease congestion ahead of the Games.
