Containership demand pushes demolition to record lows

STRONG demand for tonnage and high charter rates led to a collapse in containership demolition during 2021, and there a few signs of an immediate pick up in scrapping. Figures from Alphaliner show that only four ships, comprising just 2,489 teu were sent for scrap in the second half of last year. In the first half of the year, 15 boxships totalling 14,007 teu were scrapped.
