The South Korean workforce is highly educated. Although local talent is immediately available in high-tech industries, there are chronic shortages in certain segments, such as bio-engineering, telecommunications and other technology growth industries. There is a limited pool of experienced accountants and financial experts to help foreign-invested companies with complex local accounting and tax practices, and competition is high for those with professional and bilingual skills in these areas. Turnover and absenteeism pose little concern for foreign companies, and international comparisons invariably show South Korean employees spending long hours at work. However, relatively high wage inflation and confrontational labour relations offset the high quality of the local workforce.
