Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS)

The MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) is an artillery rocket system developed by the US Army for the delivery of large volumes of firepower in a short time against critical, time-sensitive targets. MLRS consists of a self-propelled launcher/ loader, disposable launch pod container, and rockets. The US Army initially acquired 754 M270 MLRS launchers (including 58 for the National Guard) and the Marine Corps ordered a further 18. The Army began a second round of launcher acquisition in FY98 which will add 979 launchers (with final procurement in FY03) for a total of 1,733. The Army began acquiring the lighter and more deployable wheeled M142 HIMARS launcher in FY03 with an objective of 888 launchers at a cost of S2.9 billion. Army orders for the MLRS rocket have totaled over 555,000.
