Russian Air-to-Air Missiles

This report focuses on Russian air-to-air missiles (AAM) which are currently being exported. Three of these missiles are likely to be the predominate types in the export category. The R-73 (AA-11 Archer; shown top right) is a new generation short-range AAM comparable to the ASRAAM in performance. The R-27 (AA-10 Alamo: shown bottom right) is a family of medium range missiles comparable to the Sparrow. The R-77 (AA-12) is an advanced medium-range AAM comparable to the AIM-120 AMRAAM. The Russians also had at least four long-range AAM programs, the Vympel R-37, Fakel 98N6, Novator KS-172, and the SBD anti-TBM missile, most of which are in limbo.
