DARPA began funding a Long-Range Antiship Missile (LRASM) study in 2009 as a possible successor to the Harpoon antiship missile. Lockheed Martin won the initial development contracts, examining a sub-sonic alternative based on the AGM-158 JASSM, and a supersonic type. This program transitioned in 2013 into a US Navy program, currently called OASuW (Offensive Anti-Surface Warfare Weapon) with an aim to field the Increment 1 version of the missile as early as 2018. The initial version will be in the air-launched configuration with both US Navy and US Air Force acquisition expected. Given the compressed nature of the schedule, the OASuW (Increment Ⅰ) will presumably be a derivative of the JASSM missile. The OASuW (Increment Ⅱ) is expected to be competitively developed with introduction in the 2024 time frame.
