US Army Tank PGM

The US Army has been attempting to field a tank precision guided munition for nearly two-decades with little success. The XM943 STAFF (Smart Target Activated Fire & Forget) was a 120mm MMW guided tank projectile. The proof-of-principle for the projectile was completed and development concluded in FY98. The Army the army merged this with another smart 120mm projectile, the XM1007 TERM-KE (Tank Extended Range Munition-Kinetic Energy; formerly X-Rod). In July 1998, the Army awarded three contracts to begin the program to Raytheon, Al-liant Defense Electronics and Boeing North America, which was down-selected to Alliant and Raytheon in 1999.
