Interim report identifies priority issues to address in the Mental Health Act

Initial findings from the independent review of the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) have been published in an interim report (Department of Health and Social Care, 2018). Chaired by Professor Sir Simon Wessely, the review is looking specifically at the rise in the use of the MHA over the last 10 years. It seeks to establish reasons for rising detention rates, racial disparities in detention, and concerns the Act is 'out of step with a modern mental health system.'
