Europe: Prices stable during summer lull

Prices for all bulk alloys are remaining stable during the summer lull as European steel producers hold back from the spot market and focus on summer maintenance programmes. Prices were assessed unchanged for high carbon alloy at 84- 95c/lb dpp while low carbon alloy prices were flat at $1.58- 1.71/lb ddp. There was limited spot trading activity this week as demand from the European stainless steel industry is low. August is expected to be similar, as many plants take time for their yearly maintenance. Some steelmakers are expected to extend their seasonal maintenance breaks this year as they allow staff to use holidays built up during the lockdown period, which will subdue demand further.
