Compass update gets the nod

Introduced four years ago but continually updated, the SGB 2000 gyrocompass manufactured by Teledyne TSS has recently been certified by DNV-GL as meeting the performance standard required for use aboard ships subject to SOLAS regulations and enables flag states to authorise its use on any ship required to carry a gyrocompass. The SGB 2000 is a high-performance solid-state gyrocompass that incorporates maintenance-free ring laser gyros and acceler-ometers, which have a MTBF in excess of 300,000 hours. With no moving parts and no requirement for regular maintenance its makers claim the SGB 2000 offers owners of every type of ship a cost saving alternative to mechanical gyrocompasses.
