On 1 January 2015, in accordance with MARPOL Annex Ⅵ, the permitted limits on sulphur (SOx) in Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) in the Baltic and North Sea, and Emission Control Areas (ECAs) in North America and the US Caribbean will drop from 1% to 0.1%. In order to meet these new guidelines, shipowners and operators are adopting a variety of strategies, all of them costly.
