Determinants of domestic demand for some of the main Egyptian vegetables in Al-abour market (Cairo Governorate).

This study determines the demand function of the main vegetables (tomatoes, onions, and potatoes) in the Al-abour market (Cairo governorate, Egypt), highlighting variations during summer and winter. The results of the study indicate that (1) a negative statistical relationship exists between the quantity and the price of each type of vegetable; (2) changes in the prices of alternatives and supplements affect the weekly demand for the vegetables under study; and (3) the three vegetables are necessary for consumers as the demand is inelastic, and there are complementary relationships among the three vegetables as indicated by positive cross elasticities.
