Shift in Varietal Pattern of Fine Grain and Scented Rices in Haryana

Haryana state is known for its fine grain and scented rices. Acreage under scented rices varies from 20-40% of total rice area in Haryana state. In early 70's, Basmati 370 dominated followed by Taraori Basmati in mid eighties to nineties. Basmati riceis unique among vast traditional scented treasure of India and surpasses all in shape, grain and cooking qualities. Both these traditional varieties are poor yielder with poor plant type. In the recent past, many improved scented and fine grain varieties have been released and some of them being adopted by farmers of Haryana. Surveys were conducted in the years 2003-05 during July to November in each crop season in 13 rice growing districts of Haryana with aim to record varietal pattern and acreage under each cultivar.
