Immediate launch for Bagamoyo project

The government of Tanzania has announced successful negotiations with Chinese officials that will allow work to commence immediately, rather than January 2015, as previously scheduled. The Bagamoyo Port Project was signed in March 2013 as part of the TZS1.28Trn ($753M) infrastructure deal signed with China Merchants Holding International Co Ltd. The project, designed to relieve pressure on the current Dar es Salaam port, will be able to handle an estimated 20 million containers a year - 20 times more cargo than the current port. Construction had been due to begin in 2015 with the first phase to be completed in 2017 and expansion plans spread over 30 years, but with the new start date, completion should be sooner.
