Field experiments were conducted during 1999 and 2000 in New Delhi, India to evaluate the productivity of different pearl millet + cowpea intercropping system under different fertilizer treatments. The main plots consisted of sole pearl millet, direct sown pearl millet + cowpea, transplanted sole pearl millet and transplanted pearl millet + cowpea, while the sub-plot treatments consisted of biofertilizer (BF; vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza + Azospirillum), N at 20 kg/ha + P2O5 at 15 kg/ha (with and without BF), N at 40 kg/ha + P at 30 kg/ha (with and without BF) and N at 60 kg/ha + P at 45 kg/ha. Data were recorded for plant height, effective tillers per m2, days to 50% flowering, dry matter accumulation, ears per m2, ear length, grain weight per earhead, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, stover yield, seed yield and pearl millet equivalent. In general, productivity was highest with transplanted pearl millet + cowpea and application of N at 60 kg/ha + P at 45 kg/ha.
