What US LNG saga means to Panama Canal

It is always humbling to look back 10 years and ponder just how differently things turned out than expected. In 2006, Panama was unveiling plans for its expanded canal and America was busy building up a massive terminal system to handle imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from suppliers such as Qatar. Then came the shale gas boom, which gathered steam in 2007-10, and it turned out that the United States didn't need LNG imports after all. Tens of billions of dollars' worth of import terminal infrastructure gathered dust.
