The inaugural National Championship Endurance Ride tallied fewer entries than ride proponents had hoped for—a mere 19 Appaloosa horse-and-rider teams met the extreme challenge on June 3, 2006, on the rolling hills of the Kettle Moraine National Forest near Palmyra, Wisconsin. But numbers paled to the strength of spirits as Appaloosas— and non-Appaloosa wannabes with painted-on spots— charged off on a 50-mile figure-eight loop that the winning Appaloosa team, Dawn Haas and Fourmile's Kashtin, finished in five hours and 25 minutes. "I was elated," says Dawn, of nearby Eagle, Wisconsin, who along with her Appaloosa Fourmile's Kashtin, also won the George Hatley Best Condition Award. "It was just tremendous!"
