Gunshot injuries cost $48bn a year in US

Firearm injuries cost the United States $2.8bn (￡2.1bn) a year in hospital charges and $46bn a year in lost work and medical care, a new study has shown. The report in Health Affairs analysed a nationally representative sample of patients who presented alive to US hospital emergency departments with firearm related injuries from 2006 to 2014. The authors, using data from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample, identified 151000 patients-representing a weighted total of 705 000 nationally—who presented with gunshot wounds. The study found that males were nine times more likely than females to be gun victims, with men aged 20 to 24 at the highest risk.
