'Support new GPs to be partners'

Newly qualified GPs should get more support to be partners and be offered roles that encourage them to follow this career, a government commissioned review has said. The review, led by Nigel Watson, chief executive of Wessex Local Medical Committees, was launched earlier this year to try to reinvigorate the partnership model in England in the face of workload, workforce, and resource pressures. An interim report published on 2 October said that recruitment, especially of GP partners, was one of the major difficulties facing practices. Newly qualified GPs often preferred to work as locums believing the role "provides more flexibility, a better work-life balance and less risk than taking on a salaried role or partnership," it said.
