How can we improve research opportunities for Australian junior doctors?

The role of surgeon as scholar has been identified by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as one of the nine key competencies1 for success in Surgical Education and Training (SET). Research experience is highly regarded as a means to differentiate candidates during the selection process and is a training requirement to be completed prior to the fellowship examination. Furthermore, research is associated with improvements in patient care, through better unit management, theoretical knowledge and appraisal of literature and treatment options.
